In a remarkable achievement, the Al-Khobar Governorate has been listed as a smart city for the year 2024, securing the 99th spot, according to the International Institute for Management Development (IMD). This designation makes Al-Khobar the fifth city in Saudi Arabia, alongside Riyadh, Mecca, Medina, and Jeddah, to join the league of smart cities. This recognition is a testament to the Kingdom's significant efforts and progress in this vital sector, aligning with the objectives of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 under the guidance of our wise leadership.

The IMD's Smart Cities Index serves as a crucial benchmark to highlight cities' readiness in adopting advanced technologies and their commitment to building smart and sustainable societies. The index evaluates various aspects, including health and safety, employment and education opportunities, mobility, cultural activities, and governance, striking a balance between economic and technical considerations while emphasizing the well-being of residents. Smart cities aim to harness digital technologies for efficient resource utilization, reduced carbon emissions, improved citizen engagement, and responsive public spaces.

Engineer Omar Al-Abdullatif, CEO of the Eastern Region Development Authority, expressed great pride in this achievement, highlighting the Kingdom's commitment to development across various sectors. This progress is a direct reflection of the vision set forth by His Highness, the Emir of the Eastern Region, and the diligent efforts made by all stakeholders involved. Al-Abdullatif emphasized that smart cities would enhance the quality of life for all residents, providing improved access to essential services. This accomplishment is the result of rigorous collaboration between partner agencies to enhance infrastructure, implement development projects, and strive for an enhanced living environment.

The Eastern Region Development Authority extends its gratitude to all development partners who played a significant role in achieving this national milestone. The close cooperation between entities such as the Ministry of Municipal, Rural Affairs and Housing, the Eastern Province Secretariat, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Saudi Authority for Data and Artificial Intelligence, and the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has been instrumental in attaining this recognition.

The inclusion of Al-Khobar Governorate in the Smart Cities Index is expected to attract global investments, new companies, and projects that will fuel economic growth and create valuable job opportunities. These rankings reflect Saudi cities' commitment to technological advancement and the construction of smart and sustainable communities, ultimately achieving the goals set forth by Vision 2030.
