British singer Liam Payne has died after falling from the third floor of a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires. The 31-year-old singer, best known as a member of the famed British boyband One Direction, reportedly died on Wednesday at 5 p.m. local time. Local media in Argentina reported that the singer had been in Buenos Aires to attend the concert of his former One Direction bandmate Niall Horan.
Alberto Crescenti, head of the state emergency medical system, reportedly told Argentina’s Todo Noticias TV channel that Liam Payne had fallen into an internal courtyard at the hotel. Alberto Crescenti also said that authorities were investigating the circumstances of the singer's death and conducting an autopsy, reported The Guardian. Following the incident, hundreds of fans gathered outside the hotel, where officials sectioned off the entrance with tape. The report also mentioned that supporters stood in shock and many of them in tears as they consoled one another.
Liam Payne was just 16 years old when he became part of One Direction. Apart from Payne, the band consisted of Horan, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik. The group had six top-10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The chart-topping songs of the group include What Makes You Beautiful, Night Changes, and Steal My Girl. The performers ultimately disbanded in 2016, and the members all went on to pursue solo careers. Payne's last single was "Teardrop," which was released in March this year. According to a Reuters report, Liam Payne had earlier spoken publicly about his struggles with mental health and using alcohol to cope with the pressures of fame.
