Jeddah's Historic Waterfront Reclaims its Past, Ushering in a New Era of Vibrancy

Jeddah — The first phase of the Arbaeen lagoon waterfront development project in Historic Jeddah has been successfully completed as part of the ongoing Historic Jeddah Revitalization Program. Launched by Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman in 2021, this initiative has been in progress since early last year. The completion of the first phase marks a significant milestone in the efforts to breathe new life into the Historic Area.

During the initial phase, basic facilities and infrastructure were removed in preparation for the second phase of development, which is slated to begin in the first quarter of 2024. The upcoming phase will involve re-excavating the area that was previously filled in due to urban expansion, constructing a pier, and enhancing the water quality.

The Arbaeen lagoon waterfront development project is a vital component of the wider Historic Jeddah Revitalization program. Its aim is to restore the seawater to the old port of Punt, ensuring its historical significance spanning thousands of years remains intact. The historic port holds immense value, having had a profound impact on Jeddah, its inhabitants, and its culture.

Previously, areas surrounding the lagoon had been filled in to facilitate the development process, resulting in significant alterations to the lagoon's shape and creating a considerable distance between the port and the sea. The current project seeks to reconnect the sea to the port, creating a comprehensive and integrated environment. This includes the establishment of five kilometers of seafronts with natural elements, as well as the development of necessary infrastructure and amenities. Additionally, the project aims to create a sustainable environment surrounding the waterfront, stimulating economic activity, attracting business opportunities, and fostering cultural and creative projects.

The overarching vision for this waterfront project extends beyond the immediate lagoon area. It encompasses plans for a yacht marina, new residential and hotel neighborhoods to the north and south of the lagoon, as well as markets and restaurants. These additions will contribute to the establishment of a vibrant and sustainable residential and commercial community.

The completion of the first phase signifies significant progress towards the realization of the Historical Jeddah Revitalization Program's objectives. It underscores the commitment to preserving cultural heritage while creating a modern and thriving environment for both residents and visitors alike.

With the second phase set to commence in early 2024, anticipation is growing for the remarkable transformation of the Arbaeen lagoon waterfront and its surrounding areas.
