ICC Announces Equal Prize Money For Men And Women In World Cups
|The winners of the tournament will receive $2.34 million, which marks a 134% increase
The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced a historic decision that the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 will be the first ICC event where women will receive the same prize money as their male counterparts. The winners of the tournament will receive $2.34 million, which marks a 134% increase from the $1 million awarded to the champions in 2023. The ninth edition of the prestigious event is set to begin on October 3 in the UAE.
The runners-up of the tournament will receive $1.17 million, a rise of 134%, and the semi-finalists will receive $675,000 each. Also, each group stage win will be rewarded with $31,154. According to the ICC, the six teams that fail to reach the semi-finals will share a pool of $1.35 million depending on their finishing positions, and the main highlight is that all ten participating teams are assured of $112,500.
ICC highlighted that cricket is the only major team sport to have equal prize money for its men’s and women’s World Cup events. The decision regarding equal pay was taken at the ICC Annual Conference in July 2023. The move is in line with the ICC’s plan to prioritise the women’s game and boost its growth by 2032.
