Congress MP Rahul Gandhi was appointed as the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. This announcement was made by party general secretary KC Venugopal on Tuesday after a meeting of the floor leaders of opposition parties. While addressing the media, KC Venugopal added that Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi has informed Lok Sabha pro tem speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab about the Opposition alliance’s decision. The meeting of floor leaders of the INDIA bloc was held at Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge's residence. As the Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi will be part of major committees like those for the selection of the election commissioners and the director of the Central Bureau of Investigation.
In the recently concluded general elections, Rahul Gandhi won Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat as well as the Wayanad constituency in Kerala. Last week, the party announced that Rahul Gandhi would retain the Rae Bareli seat. "In the 18th Lok Sabha, the House of the People shall truly reflect the aspirations of the last person standing, with Rahul Gandhi becoming their voice," wrote party president Mallikarjun Kharge in an X post on Tuesday.
