Donald Trump Threatens To Impose New Tariffs On China, Mexico And Canada
China’s embassy in Washington has responded to Trump's announcement and said that “no one” would win a trade war between the sides.
US President-elect Donald Trump made a crucial announcement that he would sign an executive order imposing a 25% tariff on all products coming into the US from Mexico and Canada and additional tariffs on China. A tariff is a tax placed on goods when they cross national borders. During the US presidential campaign, Trump had threatened tariffs of 60% on Chinese goods. The Canadian and Mexican economies would face severe difficulties if Donald Trump move forward with the threatened tariffs.
"On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders," said Trump in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social. Trump, who takes office on January 20, 2025, stated that the tariffs would remain in place until the two countries clamp down on drugs and migrants crossing the border illegally. Trump also said in a subsequent post that he would also impose a 10% tariff on China, “above any additional tariffs,” until the country took action to stop fentanyl smuggling.
China’s embassy in Washington has responded to Trump's announcement and said that “no one” would win a trade war between the sides. Meanwhile, when Trump imposed higher tariffs during his first term as US president, other countries, including Canada, responded with retaliatory tariffs of their own.
