Euro 2024: Georgia Stun Portugal To Reach Knockout Stages

Georgia has created history in the ongoing Euro 2024 with a sensational 2-0 win over Portugal. Competing at the first major tournament in the nation’s history, Georgia secured its place in the round of 16. At the same time, this was only the second time Portugal failed to score in their last 12 Euro games.

A goal from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Georges Mikautadze in each half earned Georgia, the lowest-ranked team at the tournament, a significant win against Portugal. Notably, Portugal had already qualified from Group F. Portugal had chances, but failed to convert or beat goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. Following the win, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia reportedly said that Georgia’s miracle qualification was the best day of his life.

“There was no individual best player, it was a team effort and we showed that we could play,” Kvaratskhelia said, as quoted by The Guardian. It was Georgia's greatest achievement since gaining independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Georgia is now all set to face Spain on June 30 in the Round of 16.
