Former Pakistan PM Imran Khan Applies For Oxford Chancellor Post From Jail
Britain's prestigious university has not yet commented on Imran Khan's application for chancellor.
Pakistan's former prime minister Imran Khan, currently serving a prison sentence, applied to become the next chancellor of Britain's Oxford University. This was announced by Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. This development comes after Chris Patten, the current chancellor, announced that he would be stepping down.
According to PTI's post on social media platform X, the request was submitted via Sayed Zulfikar Bukhari, the London-based spokesman for the party. According to a BBC report, Imran Khan is already an honorary fellow of Oxford’s Keble College, where he studied philosophy, politics, and economics (PPE) in 1972. His qualifications also reportedly include eight years as chancellor of the University of Bradford. Imran Khan has been arrested in August 2023 after being convicted of corruption.
Meanwhile, Britain's prestigious university has not yet commented on Imran Khan's application for chancellor. The voting for the post will be held on October 28, and the university will not confirm the candidates for the position until early October. Only Oxford graduates and members of the university’s congregation are able to vote. As per the rule, candidates cannot be current students or employees of the university. Chris Patten, the outgoing chancellor, has held the position since 2003.
