Justice Sanjiv Khanna Sworn In As 51st Chief Justice Of India
Justice Khanna, who was elevated to the Supreme Court from the Delhi High Court in January 2019, will have a nearly seven-month term till May 13, 2025.
Justice Sanjiv Khanna officially assumed office as the 51st Chief Justice of India. Justice Sanjiv Khanna succeeds Justice DY Chandrachud, whose term as CJI ended on November 10. The new Chief Justice of India was administered oath by President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Justice Khanna, who was elevated to the Supreme Court from the Delhi High Court in January 2019, will have a nearly seven-month term till May 13, 2025. Justice Sanjiv Khanna has been part of several landmark judgments of the apex court. He was part of the Constitution Bench decisions in Article 370 and Electoral Bonds cases. Justice Sanjiv Khanna began his law practice in 1983 in the areas of taxation, constitutional law, and commercial and environmental matters, among other things, reported Bar and Bench.
The central government officially notified the appointment of Justice Sanjiv Khanna on October 24 following Chief Justice DY Chandrachud’s recommendation on October 16. Friday, November 8, was the last working day of Justice DY Chandrachud as the CJI.
