The disaster response agency of the United Nations estimated that some 630,000 people have been affected by the flooding.
The death toll from flooding in Myanmar following Typhoon Yagi has reached 226. At least 77 people are still missing, and the floods have affected dozens of townships across the country. Typhoon Yagi is one of the strongest storms to hit the region in 2024. The typhoon swept across southern China, Vietnam, Laos, and Myanmar last week, bringing torrential rain.
Meanwhile, the United Nations reportedly warned that more than half a million people in the war-torn Myanmar are in urgent need of food and drinking water. The UN said that the storm's devastation spanned nine states and regions in the country, reported the BBC. Myanmar has been in turmoil since early 2021, when the army sized power after ousting the democratically-elected government. According to the UN, nearly three million people are estimated to have been displaced by conflict.
The disaster response agency of the United Nations estimated that some 630,000 people have been affected by the flooding. However, damaged roads and bridges, as well as unstable telecommunication and internet services, were hampering relief efforts in Myanmar. Meanwhile, India has dispatched emergency humanitarian assistance to Myanmar, Laos, and Vietnam to help people affected by Typhoon Yagi. India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said on X that India has sent 10 tons of aid, including dry rations, clothing, and medicines, to Myanmar aboard the Indian naval ship INS Satpura.
