Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the women's 50 kg wrestling final at the Paris Olympics. Multiple reports suggest that Vinesh Phogat was disqualified as she was found 100 gram overweight during the weigh-in on the day of the final. Earlier, the 29-year-old made history by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to enter the final of a wrestling event in the Olympic Games.

"It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women’s Wrestling 50kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning," said IOA in a statement. "No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time. The Indian team requests you respect Vinesh’s privacy. It would like to focus on the competitions on hand," read the statement.

The Indian Express reported that Vinesh Phogat was approximately 2 kilos overweight on Tuesday night, and she did not sleep the whole night and did everything in her capacity to meet the criteria. The report, citing sources, also said that the Indian delegation pleaded for some more time to give Vinesh Phogat a chance to shed the last 100 grams. However, the efforts went in vain. As per the competition rules, the Indian wrestler will not be eligible for a silver medal, leaving only gold and bronze winners in the 50 kg category, reported The Economic Times.
