Thomas Tuchel Named New England Football Manager
The 51-year-old will be the third non-British permanent manager of the men's team after Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.
Thomas Tuchel has been named the new head coach of the England national team. Country’s Football Association said that the former Chelsea manager has signed an 18-month contract and will assume the role on January 1, 2025. The 51-year-old will be the third non-British permanent manager of the men's team after Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.
Lee Carsley, the interim boss since Gareth Southgate's exit in July, will remain in charge of the Three Lions through to the conclusion of the UEFA Nations League group stage next month before returning to the Under-21s. Southgate resigned after England’s defeat by Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
Apart from Chelsea, Tuchel previously managed Mainz, Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain, and most recently, Bayern Munich. "Fundamentally we wanted to hire a coaching team to give us the best possible chance of winning a major tournament, and we believe they will do just that," CEO Mark Bullingham said in a statement. Notably, England have not won a major trophy since the 1966 World Cup. England will start their qualification process for the 2026 tournament, due to be staged in Canada, Mexico, and the USA.
