Tech giant Meta is preparing to cut about 5% of its global workforce, and it will reportedly focus on the company’s lowest-performing staffers. According to a CNBC report, Meta said that employees affected by the layoffs will be notified by February 10. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg noted that the company would "backfill" the roles later this year.

"This is going to be an intense year, and I want to make sure we have the best people on our teams," Zuckerberg said in an internal memo, as quoted by CNBC. "I’ve decided to raise the bar on performance management and move out low performers faster," he added. According to the most recent quarterly report, the Facebook parent has more than 72,000 employees. Meanwhile, the exact number of job cuts is unclear.

The job cuts are the latest in a slew of changes announced by the company in the past few days ahead of the Donald Trump administration in the US. Mark Zuckerberg had announced the end of Meta's fact-checking program. Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, three of the largest social media platforms in the world with over 3 billion users, will be impacted by the changes.
