Meta Agrees To Pay $25 Million To Settle 2021 Trump Lawsuit
Around $22m of the settlement will go toward a fund to pay for Trump’s presidential library.

Facebook parent Meta has agreed to pay $25 million to settle a lawsuit with Donald Trump. The US president sued Meta and its chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, in 2021 over the suspension of his accounts after the January 6 attack on the US Capitol. The White House has not made any official statement on the settlement.
The Wall Street Journal was the first to report on the settlement. Around $22 million of the settlement will go toward a fund to pay for Trump’s presidential library. The remainder will be used to cover legal fees and the other plaintiffs who signed on to the lawsuit. The settlement also does not require the social media giant to admit wrongdoing. The company has filed a notice regarding the settlement in a federal court in San Francisco.
Facebook initially suspended and then announced in June 2021 that it would ban Trump for at least two years after finding that his posts on January 6 had stoked violence. Twitter, now named X, also barred Trump from the platform for the same reason. Trump was reinstated on X in 2022 and returned to Facebook in 2023.
