At least 49 people have died in a building fire in Kuwait. The blaze erupted in the city of Mangaf around 6 am local time on Wednesday. The Health Ministry said that dozens of people were injured in the incident. Officials said the fire had been brought under control and added that they were investigating the cause of the fire.

The building reportedly accommodates around 195 labourers, including Indians. The Kuwait Health Ministry said in a statement that all injured people, including some in critical condition, have been taken to several nearby hospitals for necessary medical treatment. Sheikh Fahad Yusuf Saud Al-Sabah, the country's deputy prime minister, ordered the arrest of the building owner during a visit to the site.

The Indian Embassy in Kuwait said in a post on X that the Embassy is in constant touch with Kuwaiti law enforcement, fire service, and health authorities for necessary action and emergency medical healthcare. The Embassy also issued a helpline number and said the fire accident involved some Indian workers. Meanwhile, External affairs minister S Jaishankar said that he was "deeply shocked" by the news of the incident. "Our Ambassador has gone to the camp. We are awaiting further information. Deepest condolences to the families of those who tragically lost their lives. Wish early and full recovery to those who have been injured," wrote S Jaishankar in a post on X.
