Commonwealth Games 2026: Glasgow Officially Confirmed As Host City
A total of 3,000 athletes from up to 74 Commonwealth nations and territories are likely to compete in the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has announced Glasgow as the host city of the 2026 Commonwealth Games. The Games, last hosted in Birmingham in 2022, will take place between July 23 and August 2, 2026. The 23rd edition of the event will feature a 10-sport programme concentrated across four venues in Scotland.
A total of 3,000 athletes from up to 74 Commonwealth nations and territories are likely to compete in the 2026 Commonwealth Games. However, the event has axed several prominent sports, including cricket, diving, badminton, beach volleyball, hockey, rugby sevens, squash, table tennis, and para-table tennis. When the Games were last held in Glasgow, 17 sports were played. Authorities have not provided any specific reason for the scrapping of the sports.
The sports included in the 2026 Games include Athletics and Para Athletics (Track & Field), Swimming and Para Swimming, Artistic Gymnastics, Track Cycling and Para Track Cycling, Netball, Weightlifting and Para Powerlifting, Boxing, Judo, Bowls and Para Bowls, and 3x3 Basketball and 3x3 Wheelchair Basketball. ‘’The 2026 Games will be a bridge to the Commonwealth Games of tomorrow – an exciting first step in our journey to reset and redefine the Games as a truly collaborative, flexible and sustainable model for the future that minimises costs, reduces the environmental footprint, and enhances social impact – in doing so increasing the scope of countries capable of hosting," said CGF CEO Katie Sadleir in a statement.
