Dubai Begins Trial Operation Of World's First 3D-Printed Abra
The abra was manufactured by Abu Dhabi's Al Seer Marine Company in collaboration with various global firms
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has commenced the trial operation of the world's first electric abra manufactured using 3D printing technology. The electric boat was designed and built to retain the traditional abra identity and has the capacity to carry 20 passengers. The latest 3D printing strategy aims to reduce abra manufacturing time by 90%.
Apart from reducing the manufacturing time, the initiative also aims to slash manufacturing costs and reduce operation and maintenance expenses by 30%. The abra was manufactured by Abu Dhabi's Al Seer Marine Company in collaboration with various global firms, including Mitsubishi, Siemens, and Torqeedo.
RTA mentioned in its statement that it is currently working on a project to upgrade the traditional abra stations in Dubai Creek. The project aims to boost marine transport services, strengthen safety and security standards, and enhance the overall appearance of the traditional abra stations. Notably, over 14 million passengers use these stations annually.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, said that the trial run of electric abra is part of the master plan to improve marine transport services. "The abra will be operated at the Sheikh Zayed Road Marine Transport Station on the TR6 line on a trial base. During this operation phase, the performance of the abra will be monitored and compared with the current 20-passenger fibreglass abras," added Mattar Al Tayer in the statement.
