Dubai Municipality Launches New Sustainable Waste Management Project In Hatta
On average, the Hatta region generates approximately 20 tonnes of municipal solid waste daily, along with an additional 27 tonnes of agricultural waste from surrounding areas
In a pioneering initiative to enhance waste management practices, Dubai Municipality has joined forces with Imdaad to launch the project titled ‘Outsourcing Waste Collection, Transportation, and Recycling Services’. The project aims to revolutionize waste management practices in the Hatta region.
As part of the initiative, Dubai Municipality has transformed the Hatta landfill into an advanced facility from which segregated waste can be transferred to treatment sites in Dubai. Covering an expansive area of over 60,000 square meters, the facility features a dedicated administrative office and a waste disposal zone. On average, the Hatta region generates approximately 20 tonnes of municipal solid waste daily, along with an additional 27 tonnes of agricultural waste from surrounding areas. This waste will now be meticulously managed, with non-recyclable waste destined for the Warsan waste-to-energy plant.

The project is set to directly benefit 1,147 homes in the region with the distribution of over 2,500 new waste storage and collection containers. These containers, distinguished by color, play a vital role in waste segregation efforts. Green containers signify recyclable waste, while black containers are designated for non-recyclables. To further facilitate proper waste management, the containers are equipped with illustrations and instructions, educating residents on the importance of segregation at the source, reported Khaleej Times.
Dubai Municipality has a proven track record of outsourcing waste management services, having implemented the 'My City My Environment project' which was unveiled in 2012. Over 18,000 homes have reportedly benefited from this initiative, and the municipality has added 36,400 residential storage containers to promote better waste management in specific areas, along with supporting the deployment of 65 multi-utility machines and 300 field workers. Through these concerted efforts, Dubai Municipality, in collaboration with Imdaad, continues to advance its vision of fostering a sustainable society.
