Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched the study and design of Phase II of the Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) project. The second phase aims to cover 100% of the main roads in the emirate and adopt the latest intelligent technologies and software. The length of the road network covered by this significant initiative will be extended from 480 km to 710 km.

The initial phase of the project witnessed the addition of 116 traffic surveillance cameras and the installation of 100 incident monitoring and vehicle counting devices. Authorities have also installed 112 Variable Message Signs (VMS) that relay real time information about road conditions and 115 travel time and speed measurement devices. Notably, RTA manages traffic in Dubai through the Dubai Intelligent Traffic Systems Center at Al Barsha. The ITS Centre is equipped with an integrated technology platform that uses artificial intelligence, big data, advanced communication systems, and various monitoring devices to deliver smart services and gather important information.

According to Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, the expansion will improve road network management and traffic flow through better monitoring. "The project has improved incident monitoring by 63%, reduced response times by 30%, enhanced traffic flow, increased traffic management efficiency, and reduced journey times by 20% through Variable Message Signs (VMS)," added Mattar Al Tayer in a statement.
