Indian football captain Sunil Chhetri is set to play his last international match today as India will face Kuwait in the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifier. The farewell match will kick off at 7 pm at Kolkata's Salt Lake Stadium. This match will mark the end of an era in Indian football. It will also be a crucial match for India to keep their hopes alive of qualifying for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Sunil Chhetri, the most prolific goal-scorer in Indian football, made his international debut in 2005. The Secunderabad-born footballer is the third-highest goalscorer in men's international football with his 94 goals, trailing just to Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. The centre-forward also represented major Indian clubs, including East Bengal, Mumbai City FC, and Bengaluru FC.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid star midfielder and Croatia captain Luka Modric has shared a heartwarming message for Sunil Chhetri ahead of the farewell match. "Hi Sunil, I just want to say hello and wish you all the best for your last game with national team. Congratulations on your career. You're a legend of this game. To your teammates, I hope you make his last game special and unforgettable. Good luck and win for your captain. All the best and best regards from Croatia," said Luka Modric in a video posted by India's head coach, Igor Stimac, on X.
