Mark Carney will become the next prime minister of Canada, as he won the race to become leader of the country's ruling Liberal Party. Carney, former governor of the Banks of Canada and England, secured 86% of votes cast in a contest in which just under 152,000 party members voted. The 59-year-old will replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation in January.

Reports suggest that Mark Carney, who holds degrees from Harvard and Oxford universities, is set to be sworn in as PM in the coming days. Carney was governor of the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013 and the first non-British Bank of England governor in 2013, a position he held until 2020. He also helped guide Canada through the 2008-09 global financial crisis.

Mark Carney assumes the leadership while Canada is locked in a trade war with the US. “America is not Canada. And Canada never, ever, will be part of America in any way, shape or form,” Carney said in his victory speech. One of the new PM's first decisions will be whether or not to call a snap election in the middle of a crucial trade war.
