Martial Law: South Korean President Impeached By Parliament
The Constitutional Court, one of the country's highest courts, will now decide whether to reinstate Yoon or formally remove him.
South Korea’s parliament voted to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol on Saturday. The move comes following Yoon's short-lived declaration of martial law on December 3. With the impeachment vote, Yoon has been suspended from office, and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo will step in as interim leader.
The Constitutional Court, one of the country's highest courts, will now decide whether to reinstate Yoon or formally remove him. This process can take up to six months. If President Yoon is removed from office, a snap election will be called. A total of 204 lawmakers approved the motion to impeach the president. Yoon had survived an impeachment vote last weekend after members of his ruling People Power Party boycotted the vote.
"Although I am stopping for now, the journey I have walked with the people over the past two and a half years toward the future must never come to a halt. I will never give up," Yoon said, as quoted by Reuters. Notably, Yoon Suk Yeol is also under criminal investigation for alleged insurrection over the martial law declaration, and the government has banned him from travelling overseas.
