The Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine 2024 has been awarded to Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun. The prestigious award is for the discovery of microRNA and its role in post-transcriptional gene regulation. The year's Nobel follows the 2023 award to Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman for mRNA vaccine research.

"Their groundbreaking discovery revealed a completely new principle of gene regulation that turned out to be essential for multicellular organisms, including humans," the Nobel Assembly said in a statement. "Their surprising discovery revealed an entirely new dimension to gene regulation. MicroRNAs are proving to be fundamentally important for how organisms develop and function," the statement added.

The Nobel Prize was announced by the Nobel assembly at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden. The winners will reportedly share a prize of 11 million Swedish kronor ($1 million). The Nobel announcements will continue with the physics prize on Tuesday, chemistry on Wednesday, and literature on Thursday. Meanwhile, the Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday.
