North Korea Blows Up Roads Near South Korean Border

North Korea has reportedly blown up sections of the roads that connect it to South Korea. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a message sent to the media that some parts of the road north of the military demarcation line (MDL) dividing the two countries were blown up at about midday (03:00 GMT).

North Korea earlier warned that it would take measures to completely cut off its territory from the South. Meanwhile, South Korea also said that their military fired warning shots south of the demarcation line. Tensions between both countries surged since North Korea accused its neighbour of sending drones carrying propaganda leaflets over Pyongyang.

According to a CNN report, parts of the Gyeongui line on the west coast and the Donghae line on the east coast were destroyed by explosives. South Korea’s military has also released video footage of the blasts. At the same time, the two roads have long been closed. North Korea made this move after leader Kim Jong Un called a meeting with his top military officials to discuss the drone issue. North and South Korea have been separated since the Korean War ended in 1953.
