The Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) of Qatar decided to phase out the 3G network in the country by December 31, 2025. This step is aimed at optimum utilization of current radio spectrum resources to support and enhance the performance of 4G and 5G networks.

Meanwhile, the communications regulator has also decided to ban the import of mobile phones that support only second and third-generation technologies while approving devices compatible with 4G/Voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology that meet required standards and have obtained type approval certificates from CRA. The regulator mentioned in its statement that Ooredoo Qatar and Vodafone Qatar are obligated to cease third-generation services by the specified deadline.

The decision aligns with CRA’s efforts to gradually retire the outdated technologies, permitting the two telecom service providers to direct their investments towards the development and expansion of 4G and 5G networks. This promotes the expansion of the telecommunications industry in Qatar, which benefits all stakeholders and helps to diversify the local economy in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.
