Saudi Arabia Expresses Concerns Over Red Sea Tensions and Calls for De-escalation

Riyadh - Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, has voiced deep concerns about the escalating tensions in the Red Sea, involving attacks by Yemen's Houthi militia and recent U.S. strikes on Houthi targets. Reuters reports from Washington that the kingdom fears these developments could lead to a dangerous escalation of the conflict in the region.

In an interview with CNN's 'Fareed Zakaria GPS,' scheduled to air on Sunday, Prince Faisal bin Farhan stated, "Of course, we are very worried. We are in a very difficult and dangerous time in the region, and that's why we are calling for de-escalation."

Incursions by the Iran-aligned Houthi militia, targeting ships in and around the Red Sea over the past few weeks, have not only disrupted trade between Asia and Europe but have also provoked concerns among major powers, intensifying the Gaza conflict.

The Saudi Foreign Minister emphasized that the Kingdom strongly upholds freedom of navigation and is committed to de-escalating tensions in the region. He said, "We firmly believe in the freedom of navigation—a crucial aspect that must be protected. However, it is equally imperative to ensure the security and stability of the region. As a result, we are foremost focused on de-escalating the situation as much as possible."

Saudi Arabia's vocal concerns reflect the seriousness with which the kingdom regards the current scenario in the Red Sea. As tensions continue to escalate, Saudi Arabia urges all stakeholders to prioritize dialogue and seek peaceful resolutions that can safeguard regional peace and stability.
