The midday break is set to begin across the United Arab Emirates today. The initiative, which prohibits working under direct sunlight and in open-air spaces every day from 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm, will be effective until September 15. The UAE is implementing the midday break for the 20th consecutive year. Notably, companies that violate the rule will face fines of AED5,000 for each worker operating during the midday break hours.

Dr. Abdulrahman Al Awar, UAE's Minister of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE), has reviewed the private sector’s preparations to begin implementing the Midday Break. MoHRE said in a statement that outdoor worksite supervisors will be trained on first-aid procedures and medical examinations will be conducted for workers. The UAE will also provide 6,000 rest stations for delivery workers across the country. Workers can locate these stations through an interactive map.

Notably, inspection teams from the Ministry will conduct field visits to work sites to ensure companies’ compliance with the rule. Companies are required to provide parasols and shaded areas to protect workers against direct sunlight during the break. Additionally, adequate cooling devices, including fans, sufficient drinking water, and hydrating materials, should also be provided on the job sites. With this significant initiative, which is a cornerstone of the UAE's labour market legislation, the country aims to provide a safe working environment for workers.
