In a significant milestone for the UAE's space program, Sheikh Hamdan, the Crown Prince of Dubai, has approved the launch of MBZ-SAT no earlier than October 2024. Sheikh Hamdan visited the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) headquarters to receive briefings on the latest developments and upcoming phases of MBZ-SAT, the region's most advanced satellite.

Sheikh Hamdan, also the President of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC), said that the upcoming launch of MBZ-SAT marks a key moment that affirms the country's rising influence as a major global contributor to the field of space technology. “Through our innovative endeavours and the dedicated efforts at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre, we are committed to not only advancing our nation's capacity in space technology but also contributing valuable knowledge and insights that will benefit the wider region and the international community," the Crown Prince added.

MBZ-SAT boasts a remarkable feat, as it was entirely developed and built by a team of Emirati engineers. Nearly 90% of its mechanical structures and most electronic modules were manufactured by local companies, significantly advancing the region's aerospace manufacturing capabilities. The satellite is equipped with one of the most powerful cameras ever built in the region, capable of capturing high-resolution images with exceptional clarity. This positions the UAE as a hub for cutting-edge space technology development. The captured data will be available globally through an advanced system, supporting applications in mapping, environmental monitoring, navigation, and disaster relief.

Following successful environmental testing, MBZ-SAT will be launched on a SpaceX rocket. Upon reaching orbit, it will be operated and monitored from the MBRSC Mission Control Centre, joining the ranks of the UAE's existing satellites. Salem Humaid AlMarri, Director General of MBRSC, said that the MBZ-SAT project has flourished under the guidance of Sheikh Hamdan. "With MBZ-SAT, we are not only launching a satellite; we are elevating our capabilities to meet the challenges of tomorrow and inspire a new generation of scientists and engineers,” noted Salem Humaid AlMarri.
