Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau survived a vote of confidence aimed at bringing down his government and triggering an election. Legislators voted 211-120 to defeat a motion by the opposition Conservative Party that declared a lack of confidence in Justin Trudeau’s government.

“Today was a good day for the country because I don’t think Canadians want an election,” said Karina Gould, the senior Liberal lawmaker. The popularity of Justin Trudeau, who has been Canada’s prime minister for nine years, is declining amid rising costs of living and a worsening housing crisis. In recent months, there has been increasing pressure on the Canadian PM to resign. Notably, Justin Trudeau's Liberal Party also lost two consequential by-elections in 2024.

At the same time, the Conservative Party is planning to bring at least two other similar no-confidence votes on Thursday, reported the BBC. The report also mentioned that a deal between Justin Trudeau's party and the New Democratic Party (NDP) has helped him stay in power since the country's last federal election in 2021. However, the deal collapsed early in September, and this left Justin Trudeau more vulnerable to a no-confidence measure.
