Global Cities Index: Abu Dhabi Ranks First In The Arab World
Cities in the United States and Europe dominated the top 50 on the list
Oxford Economics has recently released the inaugural Global Cities Index, an initiative that claims to deliver a comprehensive evaluation of the world’s 1,000 largest urban economies. As per the Global Cities Index for 2024, Abu Dhabi ranked first among the Arab world and secured 54th position globally. Cities in the United States and Europe dominated the top 50 on the list.
The Global Cities Index assesses cities based on 27 indicators across five categories. This includes Economics, Human Capital, Quality of Life, Environment and Governance. Apart from the UAE capital, Dubai, Sharjah, and Ajman jointly secured the 92nd position globally. Riyadh came in third among Arab cities and secured 118th globally, followed by Dammam at 189th and Al Ain at 218th globally.
The best city across all five parameters assessed in the index is New York, followed by London, San Jose, Tokyo, Paris, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Melbourne, and Zurich. Indian cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, are also featured on the list. Delhi has emerged as the highest ranking Indian city, achieving the 350th position globally. "Our Global Cities Index provides a consistent framework for assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the largest 1,000 cities across the world, and when coupled with our forecasts, it enables organisations and policymakers to make more informed strategic decisions," said Mark Britton, Director of City Services at Oxford Economics.
