France captain Kylian Mbappe suffered a broken nose during the team's opening game against Austria at the ongoing Euro 2024. Mbappe, who was making his first appearance as captain in a major international tournament, collided with Austria's Kevin Danso, resulting in a serious facial injury. The incident happened in the 84th minute inside the penalty box.

The French Football Federation reportedly said in a statement that Mbappe will receive treatment in the next few days but will not undergo surgery immediately. "A mask will be made for him so that the number 10 of the French national team can prepare for his return to the competition after a period dedicated to treatment," the federation added in the statement, as quoted by the Independent. During the post-match news conference, head coach Didier Deschamps said that the 25-year-old's "nose got badly hit."

The injury is a huge blow for France, as Mbappe is integral to their hopes of winning a third European Championship. France, one of the favorites at this year's Euros, is set to face the Netherlands on Friday, and Mbappe's status for the coming games has not yet been determined. He has scored 47 goals in 80 appearances for France.
