The United Kingdom is all set to hold the general election on July 4, and it is the first national vote since 2019. Opinion polls indicate that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Conservative Party will face a setback in the upcoming election. Voters in the United Kingdom will elect all 650 members of the House of Commons. The country depends on the “first past the post” system of voting, which means that the candidate that finishes top will be elected, even if they fail to secure 50% of the vote. The majority of the seats are witnessing a close contest between Conservatives and Labour. The party that secures a majority in the House of Commons will be able to form the next government, and its leader will be the prime minister. The Conservative Party, also known as the Tories, has been in power in Britain for the past 14 years. Few smaller parties have strong regional support, and it is crucial to forming the next UK government if no one wins a majority.
