Global Survey Uncovers Widespread Dissatisfaction And Shifting Priorities
The FII PRIORITY Compass survey, which is conducted annually, polled a diverse demographic sample and highlights crucial concerns impacting everyday life.
A new international survey commissioned by the Future Investment Initiative (FII) Institute in collaboration with Ipsos has revealed a significant decline in satisfaction levels among citizens from 24 countries, representing 62% of the world’s population. The FII PRIORITY Compass survey, which is conducted annually, polled a diverse demographic sample and highlights crucial concerns impacting everyday life.
The report indicates that over half of respondents are dissatisfied with the current global situation, marking an 11% increase in dissatisfaction from last year. Notably, confidence in the United States has dropped by 20% over the past year, reflecting rising global uncertainties.
Financial insecurity has emerged as the top issue across all regions, with inflation and job security identified as leading causes of concern. Dissatisfaction with government performance, healthcare access, and technology have also surged, surpassing environmental issues, which have dropped to fifth place. Currently, only 13% of respondents consider the environment their primary concern—a significant shift from previous years. Interestingly, India is the sole country where the environment remains the top priority for citizens.
Economic Strain and Governance Concerns Lead
Across the board, 40% of respondents identified the cost of living as their principal issue for the third consecutive year, and 57% report worsening inflation. The impact is especially stark in the Global North, where 66% perceive inflation as an escalating problem. Governance ranks as the second most pressing issue, with 71% of people expressing dissatisfaction with corruption levels in their countries, particularly in politically unstable regions. Healthcare follows closely, with over 50% of respondents expressing concern about the shortage of healthcare professionals, notably doctors.
Divergent Views on Technology’s Role
While citizens in the Global South appear more optimistic (60%) than those in the Global North (34%) about technology's ability to improve their lives, societal ambivalence towards artificial intelligence (AI) is evident. Approximately 37% view AI as a potential threat, with 39% remaining uncertain.
FII8 Summit to Tackle Urgent Global Issues
The survey findings arrive as world leaders and thought leaders gather in Riyadh from October 29-31 for FII8, an event expected to draw over 7,000 participants, including investors, academics, and innovators from around the globe. The discussions at FII8 will focus on key issues highlighted in the report, providing a timely framework for tackling the most pressing concerns of citizens worldwide.
Richard Attias, CEO of the FII Institute, commented on the survey, calling it a "wake-up call" for leaders globally. "The findings make sobering reading, representing the genuine concerns of citizens across the globe," Attias said. "We have a unique opportunity to shape a better and safer world, but only if leaders tune in to the issues that matter."
The FII PRIORITY Compass report comes on the heels of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York and precedes the upcoming G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, followed by COP29 in Azerbaijan, where global leaders will meet to address climate action.
