Riyadh: In a significant move towards enhancing the readiness of young graduates for the workforce, Saudi universities, under the guidance of the University Affairs Council, have commenced the implementation of the "Self-Dedicated Academic Degrees" initiative. This initiative is one of several programs under the Human Capacity Development Program and encompasses various specializations.
Dr. Bassam bin Abdullah Al-Bassam, Secretary-General of the University Affairs Council, highlighted that this initiative aims to bridge the gap between educational outcomes and labor market requirements. By allowing students to diversify their study plans and choose multiple specializations based on their academic interests and aspirations, it enables them to enhance their knowledge and skills while preparing them for successful entry into today's competitive job market. The initiative aligns with international best practices in education.
The "Self-Dedicated Academic Degrees" initiative introduces different patterns within Saudi universities. These include options such as minor specializations ("minor") and double majors ("double major"). Additionally, other patterns will be gradually implemented after thorough review, evaluation, quality control measures, and alignment with development requirements as well as labor market needs.
Notably, several universities have already begun implementing this groundbreaking initiative during its initial phase. These institutions include King Abdulaziz University, King Faisal University, Princess Noura bint Abdul Rahman University, Qassim University, and Saudi Electronic University.
This forward-thinking approach by Saudi universities demonstrates a commitment to equipping students with relevant skills while ensuring that educational outcomes are closely aligned with industry demands. The "Self-Dedicated Academic Degrees" initiative is set to empower young graduates by providing them with greater flexibility in shaping their academic journey according to their individual interests and career aspirations.
