Setback For Arvind Kejriwal As Delhi High Court Stays Bail Order

The Delhi High Court has directed an interim stay on the trial court order granting bail to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. This comes as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) moved the High Court challenging the trial court order. The vacation bench of Justice Sudhir Kumar Jain reportedly said that it is reserving the matter for a detailed order, which will be pronounced in two to three days.

"I am reserving the order for two to three days. Till pronouncement of the order, the operation of the trial court order is stayed," the single-judge bench said, as quoted by Bar and Bench. On June 20, Special Judge Nyay Bindu of the Rouse Avenue Court granted bail to the AAP leader. According to a Bar and Bench report, the Rouse Avenue Court said that the ED has failed to give any direct evidence linking Kejriwal to the proceeds of the crime. The court also added that the Enforcement Directorate had acted with bias against Arvind Kejriwal.

Kejriwal was arrested by the ED on March 21, just ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, for his alleged involvement in the Delhi Liquor Policy case. On May 10, the Supreme Court granted interim bail to Kejriwal until June 1 for campaigning for the elections. On June 2, the Delhi CM surrendered at Tihar jail.
