Supreme Court Pauses Bulldozer Demolitions Across India Until October 1

The Supreme Court has passed an interim order banning authorities from demolishing properties using bulldozers without the court's permission. While hearing a batch of pleas against "bulldozer actions" in the country, the apex court said that the interim order will continue till October 1. At the same time, the court also noted that this order is not applicable to encroachments on public roads, footpaths, railway lines, or other public spaces. 

"Till next date there shall be no demolitions without seeking leave of this court," the Supreme Court ordered, as quoted by LiveLaw. A Bench of Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan also posted the matters for the next hearing on October 1. In the previous hearing, the Supreme Court had announced its intention to establish guidelines to regulate the "bulldozer actions."

Meanwhile, Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta raised objections to the top court's order. However, the court refused to relent, saying that "heavens won't fall" if the demolitions are stopped for two weeks, LiveLaw reported. The top court also noted that after its last order regarding guidelines, certain statements were made by ministers. "After 2 September, there has been grand standing and justification. Should this happen in our country? Should Election Commission be noticed?" asked Justice KV Viswanathan.
