Mark Carney, the new Canadian Prime Minister, has called a snap election for April 28. The crucial election comes amid Canada's trade war with the Donald Trump-led US administration. Mark Carney, who has only been prime minister for 10 days, was elected by the Liberal Party recently to replace Justin Trudeau.

Notably, a snap election is an election that occurs earlier than required by the law. The federal election in Canada is scheduled to take place on or before October 20, 2025. "We are facing the most significant crisis of our lifetimes because of President Trump's unjustified trade actions and his threats to our sovereignty," said Carney on Sunday.

According to Canada's electoral system, candidates who secure the most votes in their district win, regardless of whether they get a majority. Citizens cast ballots to elect local members of the House of Commons. Political parties then choose their leaders, and those leaders will become prime minister. There are 343 electoral districts in Canada. A party must secure 172 seats to establish a majority government. At the same time, a party with the most seats, but less than 172, can create a minority government, though it requires another party's support to pass legislation.
