Donald Trump has signed an executive order that aims to overhaul federal elections in the US. According to the order, proof of citizenship will be mandatory for voter registration, and states will be prohibited from counting mail-in ballots that arrive after Election Day. Meanwhile, the latest executive order is likely to face legal challenges.

The order, titled "Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections", was signed on Tuesday at the White House. Notably, it is already illegal for non-citizens to vote in US elections. However, the order claimed that the current law that prohibited states from allowing noncitizens to register to vote was not “adequately enforced."

Citing India and some other nations as examples, Trump said the US fails to enforce "basic and necessary election protections" employed by modern, developed and developing nations. "India and Brazil, for example, are tying voter identification to a biometric database, while the United States largely relies on self-attestation for citizenship," said Donald Trump. The order also calls on states to work with federal agencies to share voter lists and prosecute election crimes. Trump threatened to withdraw federal funding from US states that do not comply.
