Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) has announced the operation of the first phase of environmentally friendly electric buses. SRTA's move is part of its efforts to support the 2050 Climate Neutrality initiative. The first phase of the project includes the operation of 10 buses on three inter-city routes.

The next stage of the initiative will witness a rise in the number of electric buses operating in Sharjah, in line with the directions of the UAE and the Sharjah government to reduce carbon footprint by relying on renewable energy in public transportation. Engineer Youssef Khamis Al Othmani, Chairman of SRTA, said that the initial phase approved to operate 10 electric buses depends on three destinations, including the Emirate of Dubai, the Emirate of Ajman, and the city of Al Hamriyah.

SRTA Chairman said that selection of the three destinations is based on studies and statistics implemented by the relevant departments in cooperation with the Intercity Transport Department according to several criteria, such as in-demand destinations with the highest number of passengers.
